Your roof and siding are your home’s first line of defense. They keep out rain, wind and moisture year after year, and they also make up most of what people see from the street. When both are worn, replacing them together can transform a home and protect it for decades.
We recently completed a full roof and siding replacement on a two-story home with a brick-accent front, a covered porch and an attached garage. Watch the project below, then read on to see how it went and what you can expect if you’re planning something similar.
Before: A Home Showing Its Age
When our crew arrived, the original siding and the aged, dark roof were both at the end of their lives. On a home with brick details and white trim, worn exterior materials make the whole house look older than it is, and worn materials can let moisture in.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Roof
- Age. Most asphalt shingle roofs last roughly 20 to 25 years.
- Curling, cracking or missing shingles. These can no longer shed water properly.
- Granules in your gutters. Heavy loss means the shingles are wearing out.
- Leaks or stains. Water marks on ceilings or in the attic mean water is getting through.
- Daylight in the attic. If light shows through the roof boards, so can water.
Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Siding
- Warping, cracking or buckling panels
- Fading or chalky color that cleaning no longer fixes
- Loose or missing pieces after storms
- Moisture problems, such as peeling interior paint, mold or soft spots
- Rising energy bills, which can mean your home isn’t sealed as well as it should be
Why Do Both at Once?
- One crew, one schedule. You deal with a single project, a single point of contact and a single cleanup.
- Better protection. Roof edges, flashing and siding meet at critical points. Doing them together lets the transitions be sealed properly.
- A cohesive look. New materials chosen together look better than mismatched old and new.
- Possible savings. Setup and equipment costs are shared across the project.
Step 1: Preparation and Protection
We set up a dumpster in the driveway, position ladders and equipment, and protect landscaping and the surrounding property before work begins.
Step 2: Tear-Off
Old roofing and siding come off first. With the old materials removed, we can inspect the roof decking and the wall surfaces underneath. Anything damaged or soft is repaired before new materials go on, so new work isn’t covering up old problems.
Step 3: Installation
The new roofing and siding go on section by section across the main house, the porch and the garage. The details are what make the work last:
- Flashing around chimneys, windows, walls and transitions
- Properly sealed vents and penetrations
- Clean, straight lines at every edge, corner and seam
Step 4: Cleanup and Final Walk-Through
When installation is finished, we clean the entire property, haul away the debris and do a final inspection with you.
After: A Fresh Look, Same Color You Love
One of the best parts of this project was the siding. We matched the finish so the home kept its classic color, now with brand-new materials. Paired with the new roof, the whole house looks clean, sharp and protected, and it stands out against the fall colors around it.
Questions to Ask Any Contractor
- Are you licensed and insured? Ask to see proof.
- What does the written estimate include? Look for materials, labor, cleanup and disposal.
- What warranties do you offer? Ask about both materials and workmanship.
- What happens if you find hidden damage? A good contractor explains this upfront.
- Can I see samples or past projects? This matters especially for color-matching.
- How long will the project take? Roof and siding together usually take longer than either alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the size of the home, the materials and the weather. We’ll give you a realistic timeline in your written estimate.
In many cases, yes. We’ll go over options with you and show you samples before anything is ordered.
No, we only need access to the exterior. It helps to move vehicles from the driveway and take down fragile items hanging on exterior walls. The work can be noisy.
Yes. Mild, dry weather is great for installation, and finishing before winter protects your home from snow and ice.
Home size, roof pitch and complexity, material choices, the condition of the decking and walls underneath, and the number of layers to remove. A free inspection and written estimate is the best way to get an accurate number.
